Heroes’ Square
One of the city’s main landmarks and the gateway to the City Park, Heroes’ Square bookends elegant Andrássy út. Construction began in 1896, when citywide developments marked the millennial celebrations of the foundation of the Hungarian state. Two colonnades display 14 emblematic figures from Hungarian history, and form a semi-circle around the centrepiece column, which itself is surrounded by the seven original Magyar chieftains and topped by the Archangel Gabriel. Flanking each side of the square are two major cultural institutions: the Museum of Fine Arts, completely revamped and reopened in 2018, and the Kunsthalle, home of temporary exhibitions of, mainly, contemporary art.

Buda Castle District
The former royal palace on Buda Castle Hill, whose foundations date back to the 13th century, is now one of the centers of cultural life in Hungary with its museums and library. This popular tourist attraction has been part of the Budapest World Heritage Site since 1987 as part of the Buda Castle District.

The palace currently houses the National Széchényi Library, the Hungarian National Gallery, and the Budapest History Museum, and its immediate surroundings are the venue for cultural and gastronomic festivals. Other „must seen” attractions are Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion, Saint Stephen’s Basilica.
